With Apple, if you got in back in 1986, you would have had a huge win. I did. Apple split multiple times and eventually started paying dividends. Back in the 80’s in tech it was customary to give shares as bonuses which at the time seemed like nothing, but shares in Apple, Sun Microsystems, Oracle, Intel eventually mattered and added up, so those bonuses ended up being huge. Also stock in many of those tech companies was relatively cheap so $1000 then netted a huge gain, which of course then you pay taxes but you never escape taxes…
I agree, Apple HAS been a big winner, particularly when it was growing at 10-20% annually. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case. Successful investing requires recognizing CURRENT accelerating trends before the masses, and also which trends have ended - that the masses don’t yet see. Apple is one of the latter, which is why Warren Buffet has been selling like crazy the last couple quarters. MSTR & Bitcoin are a couple of the former, two assets, both grossly underpriced and under-owned, with absurd growth rates. If you can stomach the short-term volatility - they will both be long-term winners as nation states, pension funds, and the masses all slowly recognize it for what it is…
BTW… really enjoyed your last column on Immigration - you are skirting the edges of the “Overton” window on a deeply polarizing issue. You risk being kicked out of the collective, claiming nothing is wrong with “America first”. My wife & her family immigrated from Canada & have spent nearly 10 years getting their citizenship - the right way. While I feel for immigrants in general, mainly those looking to better their lives - I am deeply bothered by our Government incentivizing (via handouts) a flood of Illegal immigration. That is a bridge to far for me.
I agree with your idea about successful investing. Warren Buffet is an interesting fellow, I wonder if he’ll remain successful after his business partner departed this world. They seemed like a ying&yang sort of team.
Thank you for that! Overton window - now there’s a blast from the past. Remember Glenn Beck’s book? I don’t think I was ever part of the collective….
Interesting, I’ll have a look.
